View Full Version : Cr Xi?

Hello,

Just wondering of Crystal XI Integration is coming? I received two
suggested builds of CR from people, but neither worked on a brand new DELL
machine with nothing loaded. However, when you install CR XI on the
machine, it works just fine.

I still have two more empty machines I can continue testing with (We have a
Training Lab here) that have never been touched. Would really like to be
able to get this going, and really don't care about the size of the download
at this point. Just something I can use, that works, with our "name" on the
installation.

Thanks.

When I'm testing this, what I do is set up a system restore point
before I start. Then I can always revert back to where I started. I
do this when testing all my installs where I need to mess with
registry settings etc. If it's just a plain file install, then I just
use the uninstall feature.

Robert,

The problem is that the Crystal XI merge modules (msm) definitely do not
work.

I see the same here (on 7 different machines). Your software works fine
with Xi if the full CR is installed. It does not work if the runtime
stuff is installed using the official merge modules. I have tested this
with three other runtime installers (developed with InstallShield and
Wise), same result.

BTW, we can already compile a .msi from a .msm with your name. We are
still working on the customized merge module support (a "nearly
undocumented" Microsoft feature).

Perhaps you can contact CR support to find out why the merge modules do
not work? IMO, there is something missing. Because there are already
more than 1,100 files in the merge modules (and even more in the full
install) it's impossible for me to find out what is missing. I can
only provide the technology to convert a msm into a msi - I don't have
the knowledge to fix the Xi problem.

Hi,

I can't believe we would need to install 1,100 files to make Crystal Reports
work. It's just plain ridiculous. That company has gone out of control.
I have free support and you are welcome to just use my name, my serial
number and use my support. This guy from Crystal keeps bothering me every
day asking me if he can close my support call, and I am ignoring him because
I have nothing else to say to him other than it just doesn't work.

Maybe it is a Clarion thing. Have you tried doing this with a VB program?
If not, I can give you a VB Program that runs Crystal Reports and you can
try that.

Hi,

By the way - Crystal just came out with a HOTFIX. You may want to try it,
but good luck. It downloads (40mb) and then runs WINZIP and disappears.
Amazing how they can't even do a Check for Updates properly! :-)

Hi Robert,

Yes, unbelievable. More than 1,100 files and tons of registry settings,
self-registration actions, etc., etc. A hefty 55-60 MB runtime.

It would be great if you could send me a VB test program.

I compared our .msi Xi runtime package (compiled from the latest Xi merge
module with the internal SB5 .msi runtime compiler) with runtime packages
compiled with InstallShield and Wise (latest and greatest versions).

Result: all Xi runtime packages are OK (SB5, InstallShield, and Wise).

Perhaps it's a license key thing (application and Xi runtime require the
same license key info)? I'll generate a new Xi runtime with your license
key. If the VB test program also fails, I'll contact your CR support
representative.

IMO, it's a merge module issue (because the application works fine if the
full CR stuff is installed).

Thanks,
Friedrich

Hello,

I sent you the VB6 CRViewer Source Code and VB Project. Then, you can make
sure it is not a Clarion issue.

Hello Robert,

Unfortunately, I don't have VB6 any longer and it does not compile
with my Visual Studio VB.NET (2002, 2003, 2005) versions.

Do you have a binary VB .exe available?

Thanks,
Friedrich

Robert,

I have three test applications for CR now. They do not work with any of
the available CR Xi merge module runtime packages. IMO, it's caused by
the original merge modules sources.

I'll try to do the following tomorrow:

1) install the full CR Xi and make a system snapshot
2) install the merge module runtime and make a snapshot
3) compare the snapshots
