View Full Version : Windows 7 Logo Requirements

NewsArchive

Microsoft improved the process for gaining certification for Windows 7. The
very good news is that the use of Windows Installer (MSI) or ClickOnce is no
longer listed as an explicit requirement! In other words, SetupBuilder 6.9
and 7.0 can be used to meet Certified for Windows 7 Logo requirements!

This is a very significant and welcome development. There was already a
change in the Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Certification Requirements --
MSI installation was OPTIONAL and no longer REQUIRED!

Partners must meet the following "requirements" to gain Windows 7
certification:

- Comply with Anti-spyware Coalition Guidelines - Malware or Spyware is not
accepted.
- Do not modify Windows Resource Protection (WRP) protected resources.
- Ensure ongoing quality - in short, receive crash data from Windows Error
Reporting and fix all crash reported.

Partners must meet the following "policies" to gain Windows 7 certification:

- Install and uninstall cleanly.
- Install to the correct folders by default - the "Program Files" folder
should be the default.
- Support x64 versions of Windows.
- Follow User Account Control (UAC) Guidelines.
- Do not load Services and Drivers in Safe Mode.
- Digitally Sign Executable Files (.exe, .dll, .ocx, etc.).
- Do not prevent an installation or application from launching because of OS
version checking.
- Prevent unnecessary reboots - take advantage of the Restart Manager.
- Support multiuser sessions.
- Minimize application failures.

Anything about the costs?

The "Vista-compatible" and "Works with Vista" logos were assigned by
3rd-party consultants who checked the programs accordance with the
requirements posted be MS.

The costs were up to $xx,000!

We turned it to the opposite, we say: "Vista is able to run our software"!

Our product-website will have a page with screenshots taken from all
different platforms we support.

As it is planned now, the logo certification test itself for Windows 7
(client application certification) will be free.

But there is still the VeriSign "hurdle" <vbg>

You know, Lindersoft is an official Comodo Code Signing and SSL Certificate
Partner. VeriSign does not give us a code-signing certificate which is
required for the Winqual account <g>

Friedrich mon ami .....

A french thought for you (checks are welcome <g>) :

call your microsoft contact and tell him the story of our certification - I can vouch if need be - tell him his French conterpart is aware of the situation created last
year by Versign - and simply offer them to be also on the ceretificate reseller list for Microsoft partners and that you will offer services "like in setup builder" (ie
tailor made for customers and NOT for your bank account)

could be worth a phone call

and would be an excellent revenge on verisign and the way they treated us all :)

Well, I already told Microsoft Germany my story (a few weeks ago). And do
you know what they said:

"You don't need a digital signature to do a logo certification. Perhaps you
confuse VeriSign with VeriTest"?

What???? Okay, I tried it again. I told them that you definitely need a
VeriSign digital signature to transfer your product information to Winqual
and that an existing Comodo signature (or Thawte, etc.) does not work.
Well, they had no (ABSOLUTELY NO) idea what I was talking about :-( Then I
gave up.

See Friedrich - that is the difference :)

I never gave up when confronted to all those pbs last year ....

Call him again and ask to speak higher up if he is not aware of what "they" all require ....

Winqual account requires a Verisign ceretificate

And Winqual belongs to Microsoft so ..... they easily could change the rules IF enough "heavy" people asked ..... and you plus the poney are a heavy weight :)

When I asked ..... I was politely told it would follow up higher ..... but of course never received any news

it's a pretty bad sign when employees from a private company start to
act like if they were member of a government administration. Maybe
it's time to see if we could get certified for Linux.... <g>

I agree. A VeriSign signing certificate does not make any sense here at
all.

We are registered with Microsoft, they have our credit card number, they
ship DVDs to our company address, we are part of the official internal beta
test team for Windows, Microsoft is even a SetupBuilder customer. But we
can't open our own Winqual account (to do logo certification tests) because
VeriSign does not provide us with a signing certificate. BTW, one month
after they denied our request for a certificate, we received an offer to
*sell* VeriSign certificates. Is that strange or not?

Hi Jean-Pierre,

Thank you for your kind offer! The problem is that Microsoft can't "switch"
our product certification from your Winqual account to us. So as I
understand it, I can't use your signing certificate to transmit data to our
Winqual account. But I am not sure if this is really the case. Please
correct me if you have other information.

Thanks,
Friedrich

No, Microsoft never switched it over -- we do not have a Winqual account
because of VeriSign. It's still in your account.

When using your Winqual account, it's always linked to you (as I understand
it). So all documentation says SetupBuilder is a DMC product (and not
Lindersoft) <g> Even if it is linked to our Lindersoft Microsoft Partner
