View Full Version : automatic updates NOT over the internet

I have dozens of clients that don't have or don't want an internet
connection for their business. I won't go into all of their reasons... but
it's mostly security issues.

Anyway, now that I have the automatic update working in setupbuilder, I
would like to know if there is a way that they (the users/clients) can
somehow get an update from their home computer, and bring it to their work
computer... because most folks at least have internet at home.

Is it possible to download the updates off the net perhaps with an FTP (I
would create) and put them on a flash drive.. then could I get the wupdate
program or create another program to update the software off the flash
instead of the net.

Anyone already done this? Idea's, hints, tips?

Thanks,

Hi Ray,

I do not think you can do that with the webupdate.

1. They could download the full install and re-install

2. You could create a separate install that is basically identical to the
webupdate but is a regular install, not web update. The simplest way to do
this would be to "Save as" the web install and remove the webinstall options
from it. Compile and you have a non-web install that is identical to what
is available on the web.

Best regards,

Yeah, I was just hoping for a solution that wouldn't require me to build
even more installs than I already do. I actually already have an install I
built prior to figuring out the webupdate install. The problem is it's not
secure... the way I'm doing the web update now, is if I change major
versions, I am going to create a new folder to download from.. (they have to
purchase major version updates and we send them a CD). But I'll probably end
up going with a subscription type of program eventually. Not a big deal at
this point. If we ever sell some of our smaller programs that I don't want
to deal with sending CD's... then I'll make it mandatory they have internet
for updates.

Oh well, it's a good reason to push our customers into getting internet at
their stores. They're missing out on a bunch of internet marketing features
we added to the program by not having internet (RSS,Web page creation,
email, online reservations, etc.)... It's just amazing how many businesses
are afraid of having internet on their computer or are just too cheap.

Thanks though for the suggestions.

The problem is that you never know what version the "home" machine is on.
And web update only downloads what is required for a specific machine.

Example: your latest web update installs version 1.5. One "office" machine
is on version 1.3, another machine is on 1.4. Web update brings both
"office" versions to 1.5. Let us assume, the "home" machine is on version
1.2. How to handle this situation?

For our SetupBuilder products, we provide both "full" and "web update". If
a customer has to update his SetupBuilder version on a machine that does not
have an Internet connection, he can use the full install image to bring his
product to the latest build (without having to do a full install). The full
install image detects the previous version and switches into "maintenance
mode". See attached screenshot.
