View Full Version : SB7 - SB6 - Windows 7 - no option to Pin to Taskbar - Start menu

Friedrich,

In Windows 7 - Release Candidate - there is no option to Pin to Taskbar -
Start menu for either the latest SB7 Version: 7.0.2625 or latest SB6.9 -
Version: 6.9.2587.

I have a number of other commercial products - Avast Anti-virus,
SoftwarePassport, PDF-Viewer, Snagit, etc

AND they all give that option when you right click on desktop shortcut, or
right click from menu selection in Start menu area -

but the 2 SetupBuilder products don't include that option?

Friedrich,

No, sorry, I didn't get my point across - I am not referring to an INSTALL
pinning a program to the taskbar -

AFTER the program is installed, and a desktop shortcut and/or Start Menu
selection is created - GIVING the user a CHOICE to Pin to taskbar -

Your SB desktop shortcuts or Start Menu selections DO NOT give that choice
-

however, just about ALL Start Menu selections - including MS Accessories
programs give the choice (one notable exception is Start Menu - Windows
Update).

BTW, there is no direct programmatic interface to add pinned items to either
the Start Menu or Windows 7 Taskbar. This was done deliberately to prevent
installation programs from spamming these locations with their icons.

There is one "unofficial hack" available that allows to do this in the Win7
release candidate. But Microsoft already "fixed" it in the latest source
codes.

Aha, okay. I misinterpreted your question, sorry.

Welcome to Windows 7 <g>

Some background information: generally, all executable files and Shortcuts
to executables will automatically get the "pin" options in the context menu
on the exe/shortcut and in the Jump List while the program is running.
However, there are a few exceptions:

1.) Executables which are located on remote locations (i.e. a server share)
cannot be pinned -- only local executables can be pinned.

2.) Certain strings in the Shortcut name cause that program to be excluded
from pinning.

If any of the following strings are included in the Shortcut name, the
program is NOT displayed in the most frequently used list and is EXCLUDED
from Win7 pinning:

- Documentation
- Help
- Install
- More Info
- Readme
- Read me
- Read First
- Setup
- Support
- What's New
- Remove

When the user launches the program via a shortcut, the keyword sub-string
matching is only applied to the shortcut name and not the exe name.

The Shortcut for SetupBuilder is, well, "SetupBuilder 6 Developer" and
"SetupBuilder 7 Developer". So "Setup" in SetupBuilder is an index word
here.

Microsoft says that it is not possible at this late point in Windows 7 to
"fix" it. But they will investigate further this issue as well as
separating these excluded word lists between the Start Menu (MFU) and
pinning for the future.

Does this help?

By the way, we reported this again and again in early XP, Vista and Windows
7 development stages.

This feature is responsible for the fact that you never see your SB IDE
displayed in the most frequently used list in your XP and Vista
environments. On Windows 7, the SB IDE is excluded from pinning.

But the same is true for InstallShield ("Install" is also an index word) and
some other guys <g>.

Do you think developers can live with a "SB7 Developer" Shortcut item?
Because pinning will become a popular Win7 feature, it's not good to see the
SetupBuilder IDE excluded from it -- I think it's a good idea to change the
Shortcut in the next SB7 beta niild from "SetupBuilder 7 Developer" to "SB7
Developer".

Friedrich,

I agree - it would be a good change - the icon makes it clearly -
SetupBuilder - and as you suggest - pinning is very helpful, making it
popular.

Besides, I found it "Odd" until your explanation - why SetupBuilder pinning
wasn't available.

I agree. We have changed it to "SB7 Developer" now. A new build will be
available later today.

Charles,

Well, I don't mean to burst your bubble OR your old fashioned way of doing
things! :-D

BUT from Windows 7 Release Candidate Help!

"What happened to the Quick Launch toolbar?
[This content is preliminary and subject to change.]

The Quick Launch toolbar isn't included in this version of Windows. To open
programs quickly, you can pin them to the taskbar. For more information,
see Pin a program to the taskbar."

OR as someone else might say:

"Quick Launch - We don't need no stinkin Quick Launch!" :-D
