All,
Vista makes it vital to use digital signatures in your application files and
installation packages.
The SetupBuilder 6.0 (Gold) release notes mention that the uninstaller will
not get code signed. This does not cause problems when the uninstall
application is launched from the Add/Remove Programs Panel on Vista. But
when the uninstaller is launched from the Start Menu shortcut or from the
Explorer on Vista, a dialog pops up warning the user that an unknown
application is about to do something potential bad, and gives the user the
choice to allow or deny.
The problem is that the uninstall application is compiled (on-the-fly) at
runtime. The uninstall executable is not included in the install package
("zero-byte overhead" technology). That means, there is nothing to sign
when you build your installer on your development machine.
I have to admit that I am a bit excited about a new feature in SetupBuilder
6.1. We have developed an on-the-fly code-signing feature to sign your
uninstall on the target machine. Of course, your certificate is **not**
required on the target machine to do this. A code signing tool is also
not needed on the target machine.
This Vista-vital feature will be available in the upcoming SB61.
