I just had a colleague write that he was not able to run a SB 4.03
install package on his Windows 7 Ent. 64 bit system. I tested it on my
Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit system and it worked just fine. Any known
issues in this area?

Thanks,

Jeff King

Well, any application that is not "UAC-aware" can cause problems <g>. And
SetupBuilder 4.03 (7 years old!!) does not know nothing about 64-bit
operating systems and has absolutely no idea what User Account Control (UAC)
is. There are group policies in Vista/Windows 7 that prevent unsigned
applications from running at all. Or installer detection is disabled and so
old installers do not get enough privileges. And even if such a
"non-UAC-aware" installer starts, virtualization might kick in (because it's
a "legacy" application) and then the hell breaks loose.

Rule #1 is: never ever use a non-UAC-aware installer on Windows Vista,
Windows 2008, Windows 7 and Server 7 <g>

What you can do is to ask your colleague to start the old SB 4.03 install
"as administrator". But you can't count on it.

Does this help?

Friedrich,

Yes! That clears things up. In fact, I now recall that I have UAC
turned off on my Win 7 machine and this probably explains why I was able
to use the old installer. I will download the latest version and update
as soon as possible. Thanks for the help.

Jeff,

Of course, updating your install with the current SetupBuilder is just a
part of what is really needed.

For an indepth list created by Friedrich Linder - study this newsgroup
thread - #3 entry contains the list.
