Little tip: Do not bring your laptop or Andrea might ensure it does not survive
the trip <g>.

Enjoy your holiday, you've all earned one!

si je me souviens.... pendant le moi d'aout entier il est practiquement
impossible trouver un bon croissant en Paris :-(

If I remember well when I used to live there :)
au contraire au mois d'aout paris est une merveille : all fenchmen are gone
and only tourists and "bonnes espagnoles" as we say are left behind : a real
pleasure : no traffic jams!
no jams no croissants ?
let's say half of the city is closed and the other half is for tourists...

worse even : try getting any real legal action between end june and early
sep ... impossible !

But as I say, go on a vacation and don't bother - i'll look after the world
while you are away ... :)

It is true though france is a xxx country when it comes to vacations and
holidays etc .... in may here we have FOUR holidays breaking the month :
result if the weather is good they are all away ...

Je me rappelle mes premières pommes frites

Okay... Here's how that went.

Jeff enters "I remember my first french fries" into babelfish. He then
posts that result here. Then re-translates that to english. "I
remember my first fried apples".

I think my days as a linguist are numbered.

And here I was starting to think that a California primary education (are
you a native, Jeff???) might have been more cosmopolitan than not...

As you may have Babeled... pomme is indeed apple.
Whereas a pomme de terre is an "earth apple" AKA potato
Fried pommes (pommes frites) would most likely refer to fried earth apples
rather than to fried tree apples.

The French are so economical with words in so many regards.
Why waste a word like "ninety", for example, when you can just recycle
existing words and say "four twenties ten"... so 97 would be "four twenties
ten seven" (unless you're Belgian or maybe Swiss).

Friedrich... you're not even officially on vacation yet and already we're
turning your news group into a playpen.....
oh the ignominy.....
