How can I interogate the server manifest file?
My client wants an option to simply display the version entry.

You have several different options. You can compile a custom
wupdate/wucheck client that displays the version number, you can write a
helper application with SetupBuilder to handle this or you can use a
pre-build solution.

Yes, indeed. This is precisely what I am after.
Where can I find the code for this?
Does it appear anywhere in the examples?

Hi Sim,

SetupCast includes a modified wupdate (both the source SetupBuilder project
and the executable) that does just that.

It gets the version number (along with other data about the update) and
then merges that at runtime so that the end user can see what version they
are running, what version the update is, how big the download will be and
any notes that you provide them about the update.

Since the source SetupBuilder project is included, obviously you could
modify it to your hearts content.

Just scroll down to #5 on this page and read from there:

Does that help?
