I agree 100% <g>. Several thousand people try to download the small 3.33GB
Windows 8 consumer preview at the same time and their servers can't handle
the load. What the hell is going on with you Microsoft <bg>. That's really

We will have to agree to disagree.<g> Very unimpressed since learning
where MS hid stuff in Vista/7 and now it's worse since they moved
stuff, yet again, because they can.

The leaning curve will be rather steep and I know a LOT of folks that
won't be able to climb that hill. Above all else MS needs to add an
option to go directly to the desktop and reinstate the "start" menu so
things can be found... like PROGRAMS!<g>

No time to play. Back to XP-Pro and C6.3 for paying work.

I have installed Win8 as a VMWare 8.0.2 virtual machine (fresh install) and
going to install Visual Studio 11 on that Win8 machine later today. I have
downloaded VS2011 Pro but noticed that Ultimate is also available. Busy
downloading Ultimate right now. On Facebook, Arnór reported that VS2011
also seems to work on Windows 7.

NewsArchive

Yes. Unless you create a VM.

But behind the scenes (aka the full-screen Start menu), it's very much a
Windows 7 desktop, without the Start button.

The Windows key (like in Windows 7) lets you switch between the Start menu
and the desktop, almost like switching between Windows 7 and Windows 8.

If you have a Windows 7 computer, not a Windows XP or a Windows Vista
computer upgraded with Windows 7, then it seems kind of obvious it will run
Windows 8 without issues.

So where is the Start menu? It seems like it's there but hidden. It's like
the Locator field on a browse screen. You don't have to display the Locator
field to have it work.

You just start typing, as you would in the Windows 7 Start menu Search box,
and it pops open the search panel and the results for you. It's very nice.
For example, just type Run or Cmd.

There's just one difference, as you start typing, and you realize you're not
getting results, you can choose between Apps, Settings or Files. Like trying
to open the Control Panel or Printers. Control Panel is under Apps, while
Devices and Printers is under Settings. The search results are nicely
displayed on a touch screen.

I'd say jump in, in particular if you have an extra Windows 7 computer that
isn't your main computer.

Have fun. This is a nice OS.

Hi everyone,

There are some differences in these two windows.
In the lower left corner of each, it shows the server (computer) name.

One window has rounded corners (in particular, those buttons in the upper
right corner) and the title is on the left.

One window has a nice outline of the sheet and tabs;
the other has bleed-through from the background.

The Bob-1 computer is running Windows 7 SP1 (64-bit);
the Bob-3 computer is running Windows 8 Consumer Preview (64-bit).

You have several different options ;-) See attached screenshots.

For example, move the mouse to the lower left corner. In the Start-menu
click on "Settings". On the right sidebar click on "Power" and then on

Yes, the latest SetupBuilder 7.6 already generates Win8-aware installations.
And the upcoming SetupBuilder 7.7 improves this again (e.g. lets you make

There isn't one in 8 which, from my point of view, has the potential
to put a lot of folks off upgrading from 7.

You now have a "Start Page" which you can get to using the windows
button on your keyboard. I believe the folks at Redmond drank the
Kool-Aid and forgot about business workstations. The touchy-feely
screen concept is fine for handhelds but sucks for desktops.
