That's how the SetupBuilder installer looks with that "flat" look of
Metro-like on Windows 8 Server (with GUI installed).

The SetupBuilder 7.7 IDE looks like this on Server 8.

Unfortunately, MS decided to keep the MDI "change" (not exactly sure what
they changed but they definitely changed something) in their new OS kernel,
so we see some threading issues now. I already noticed this in Windows 8
"Developer Preview" and my hope was that this was not a permanent change in
the OS. But I think it is.

Hi JP,

Try the following: remove the "Floppy" from your VMWare Virtual Machine
Settings for that new Windows 8. The problem is that the autoinst.flp file
contains the <ProductKey> and autoinst.flp is mounted when you start the VM.
So power off Win8 Virtual Machine, go to Virtual Machine settings and remove
the Floppy. Later, you can add the Floppy again.

Does this help?

Well, that's what I said. autoinst.flp is mounted when you *START* the VM.
So it does not make sense to try to remove it during the install <g>. Not
really a bug, but a "problem" in 8.0.0, 8.0.1 and 8.0.2. You have to power
off the Win8 Virtual Machine, go to the Virtual Machine settings and remove
the Floppy. After that start the machine and the install.

In the VMWare Virtual Machine Settings for the new Win8 operating system,
select the "Floppy" and then click "Remove" (see attached screenshot).

You have to test this. It's very well possible that your application is not
affected by this. Our SetupBuilder IDE makes heavy use of MDI and threads.
Of course, the compiled setup.exe is not affected.

BTW, they have fixed the non-movable-MDI-window bug in Win8 Consumer Preview
and Server 8.

I loved OS/2 - even used it in Clarion development in the early days.

It was cool that you could set the environment to a lower base amount of
RAM ( 256K or 384K ) so you could see what your apps would run like on a
machine so configured.

I also had it set to boot different OS's ( MS-DOS, PC-DOS and DR-DOS ) as
well as different versions of each.

So I guess in reality I was VM'ing it a long time ago.

I was a big time user of Ventura Publisher in those days. We ran GEM on

We has the spreadsheet app and a few others. I did buy the GEM SDK though I
never really did anything with it.
Lack of software killed it.

Mike,

OS/2 - definitely the best OS in it's time - but IBM marketing techniques
and MS squabbles definitely cut it's useful life shorter for most of us.

Like all OSs, eventually there is a hardware shortcoming - imcompatibility
that effectively kills the OS, unless re-written for the latest processor
technology.

Many moons ago - I LOVED OS/2 and OS/2 Warp for Clarion Professional
Developer 2.1 DOS work - had a boot manager to get back into the Windows
flavor of the day as needed.

If I recall the "rumors" correctly - MS used IBM OS/2 development funds in
their Windows development/research, while of course, both IBM and MS
battled each other over OS direction and overall development.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OS/2

"IBM grew concerned about the delays in development of OS/2 2.0 and the
diversion of IBM funds earmarked for OS/2 development towards
Windows.[citation needed]"

http://www.os2bbs.com/os2news/os2history.html

"By late 1990, Microsoft had intensified its disagreements with IBM to the
point where IBM decided that it would have to take some overt action to
ensure that OS/2 development continued at a reasonable pace.

IBM, therefore, took over complete development responsibility for OS/2 1.x,
even though it was in its dying days, and OS/2 2.00. Microsoft would
continue development on Windows and OS/2 3.00. Shortly after this split,
Microsoft renamed OS/2 V3 to Windows NT."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OS/2

BTW, here is an interesting side story how OS/2 and Russian software
developers helped birth Parallels, Inc.

"A large bank in Moscow needed a way to use OS/2 on newer hardware that
OS/2 did not support. As virtualization software is an easy way around
this, the company desired to run OS/2 under a hypervisor.

Once it was determined that VMware was not a possibility, it hired a group
of Russian software developers to write a host-based hypervisor that would
officially support OS/2. Thus, the Parallels, Inc. company and their
Parallels Workstation was born"

http://www.itjungle.com/breaking/bn090705-story01.html

Downloaded some recent Parallels User Guide type PDFs - there is reference
to OS/2 - but clerical errors - trademark reference, no further OS/2
reference - also OS/2 listed in Index, but does not appear on the indexed
page.

Friedrich,

OK, next step - do you have one of these in mothballs - computer with Intel
80286 processor - so you can fire it up and check out your favorite DOS
programs?! :-D

BTW, recently fired up an old processor - computer close to that timeline -
Atari ST 1040 - based on same Motorola 68000 processor as Macintosh Plus
(era 1987) - with Atari monochrome monitor - AND it still worked. Of
course, outdated software from that timeframe makes it a VERY awkward
paperweight! :-D

386 was a chipset, not an operating system nor a program. DOS was the
operating system and then windows. There was also DRDOS that ran on these
chipsets.

Windows/386 (Released May 1988)
A version of Windows 2.10 that took avantage of the 80386 processor.

Introduced a Protected Mode Kernel where the GUI ran and application ran in
a virtual 8086 task.
Allowed parallel MSDOS exes to run in a VDM 8086 instead of supending them
in the background.
EMS emulation.
DOS apps could access unused low memory.
Did not work with popualr third party memory managers.

Yes and no.<g> Yes, 80286 and 80386 were chips.

Windows/256 and Windows/386, although not OS's, were versions of
Windows. Check out the attached images.

That would be Windows XP (Intel Pentium I & AMD K6-2)

But Windows XP is not compatible with processors older than Pentium (such as
486) because it requires CMPXCHG8B instructions
