All,

Windows 8 Releases to Manufacturing (RTM) #9200 is here. Now that Windows 8
has arrived (today for MSDN and TechNet subscribers, and tomorrow for
Microsoft Partner Network members and Volume Licensees), we provide you with
some new SetupBuilder installer and IDE screenshots.

Windows 8 inherits many of the advantages of Windows 7 -- the manageability,
the security (plus integrated antivirus), and the broad compatibility with
existing hardware and software.

Instead of the traditional desktop, Windows 8 boots to a Start screen filled
with columns and rows of app tiles. There's no Start button on the Desktop,
and the utilities that managed to graft Start onto older beta or release
preview versions don't work with the final RTM Win8. Instead of a Start
button, Windows 8 uses a "hot corner" at the lower left. When that hotspot
is touched or clicked, the interface switches from the traditional desktop
UI to the tile-centric environment, or vice versa. The "hot corner" feature
allows you to access some built-in options when you move your mouse cursor
in a corner of your monitor screen. When you move your mouse cursor to
bottom-left corner of screen, it shows small Start Screen thumbnail which
lets you go to Start Screen. When you move your mouse cursor to top-left
corner of screen, it shows a list of all running "Modern UI" apps so that
you can switch between apps or close an app. When you move your mouse
cursor to top-right or bottom-right corner of screen, it shows new Charms
Bar where you can access Settings, Search, Share, Devices and Start Screen
charm.

The Start button and Start Menu are gone from the Windows 8 Taskbar, but
there is a new hidden Quick Access Menu (QAM) which provides easier access
to many useful system tools, such as "Programs and Features", "Power
Options", "System Settings", "Device Manager", "Command Prompt", "Task
Manager", "Control Panel", "Search", "Run", and a few more. To access QAM,
move your mouse cursor to extreme bottom-left corner of screen and
right-click (or using the "Win+X" hotkey) and you'll get the hidden system
menu.

BTW, Windows 8 Metro is Metro no more. With Metro AG issuing a trademark
dispute over the whole Metro branding, Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 user
interfaces will now be known as 'Modern UI', following threats of legal
action over the original branding.

The latest SetupBuilder 7.7 Build #3769 lets you already compile Win8-aware
and Win8-compliant setups. More news to follow soon...

Happy Windows 8 coding!

Friedrich,

THANK you for all the Windows 8 information you have posted, and will
continue to post!

Congratulations to you and Team Lindersoft for all your dedicated and MUCH
appreciated work in ongoing development of SetupBuilder!

Works AS advertised - I am in testing now, and have been using Windows 8
release preview build 8400 -

I have the Action Pack Development and Design with MSDN downloads and I'm
downloading the Windows 8 Debug/Checked Build (release date 8/15/2012) as I
type - not eligible for other W8 downloads for a couple more days at my
MSDN level.

SetupBuilder 7.7 Build #3769 - Clicked on the Windows 8 and Windows Server
2012 check boxes in Conditions Tab - recompiled, tested in Windows 8
release preview build 8400 - works GREAT!

Of course, also used SetupBuilder to re-manifest program files for Windows
8 and code-sign!

I'll be updating my company's - App Data UAC Safe CHM - at this location
soon - http://www.encouragersoftware.com/software-developers.html - with
reminder help topics for upgrading projects to Windows 8.

And to make it a bit easier for developers to download the latest - App
Data UAC Safe CHM - I'll be using a SetupBuilder install with web update
this time around!

Thanks again! Great Products! Great information announcements! Your company
always makes it much easier to ease up to the latest technologies.

Friedrich and others,

Mispoke about the August 15 W8 Debug/Checked Build - MSDN Action Pack log
in gave choice for downloading - SO I thought it was useable for me. But,
would not accept my MSDN W8 keys, so yes, I have to wait until August 20th
for MSDN Action Pack downloads that will work with my assigned keys.

But for now, I'll continue to use - Windows 8 release preview build 8400.

However, Microsoft does have a Windows 8 Enterprise RTM 90-day evaluation
accessible now. It is available to developers - NOT upgradable - so at
least I can use the RTM version of this for a couple days and do some more
testing with SetupBuilder installs - sort of a throw away W8 VM, but useful
for testing.

BTW, for those with Clarion 6 apps that could not resolve the Windows 7 ALT
bug (and are not testing Windows 8 and not aware) - there is NO Clarion 6 -
Windows 8 ALT bug!

> Sweet!

Jeff,

Just as a quick follow up to that statement -

Windows 8 release preview build 8400 still had some Clarion 6 ALT bug
symptoms - but not totally locked up - and would need to use the work
around I post at my web site support page.

"If you press ALT key by itself - the program will appear to freeze (not
useable). Actually the program has lost focus - to Restore - Press ALT +
Escape key - then click on Program Icon on Windows 7 Taskbar"

Windows 8 Pro (RTM - Build 9200) x64 and x86 - NO ALT bug for Clarion 6
apps.

Typically beautiful SB screens.
But with Win 8... who can come up with a more aptly eloquently phrase than
"lipstick on a pig" ??? <g>

The irony of your post is this is a Setupbuilder newsgroup, and Friedrich
and company get increased sales when a newer OS is released, so "lipstick
on a pig" or not - smart software publishers welcome newer OSs to increase
their bottom line! :-)
