View Full Version : Web Update on a laptop without internet connection

I have started used WebUpdate successfully. I have a few administrative
issues which Friedrich is helping me out with but otherwise all works fine.

A client has upgraded but now has this problem. The other machine he is
using my product on does not have internet connectivity. How can he get the
upgrade onto that machine? Clearly the web update exe relies on the 00001
..... files.

Do I need to build a manual update file for him? That is going to be a pain
really as I now need to manage 2 installers for every upgrade and put that
onto the server for him to download and then copy to the other machine.

Hope this makes sense.

John,

When there is no internet on a machine whatever you do it will not solve his
problem
He has to download "something" and then copy that "something" onto his
internety less machine and then "apply" that "something" to update your app

Is the best simply not to let him download the full installer which will
update his app ?
Maybe a little work in the main installer will do the trick .....

I agree. I think what I was trying to get at was if it was possible to
somehow package what is on the server and download that somehow.

But thinking about it, it would seem that a manual upgrade is the only
solution. So his inte enabled machine used web update and he then has to
download the manual update, copy and run on his other machine.

So my question really should be how can I change the web update installer to
a manual one easily or do I need to start again with a new installer.

Clients huh!!

As the name implies, "Web Update" needs Internet connectivity to work. So a
Web Update does not work if no Internet access is available :)

What we do in our own SetupBuilder distribution is, we have one *full*
install (can do both a new install and update) and one *Web Update* (updates
an existing version to the latest release). In other words, we only have
*two* projects.

If a customer does not have Internet access on one of his machines, he can
use our full install image to update his existing installation. The full
installer detects the previous version and goes into "maintenance" mode (see
attached screenshot). It then brings his version to the latest build.
That's the big advantage of the underlying scripting technology. You can do
whatever you have to do.

Thanks Friedrich.

Yes that works. The trouble is that the full install is about 23mb and the
upgrade required is only about 2mb.

I agree that what you suggest makes sense for CD releases where sending a CD
with a 23mb file makes more sense than one with 2mb but equally, downloading
a 23mb file for just 2mb seem overkill.

I think I need to think about this a lot more and for now just create a
separate downloadable upgrade install.

Hi John,

What you can also try to do is to simply unmark the "Enable Web
Installation" checkbox. The compiler will then create a single-file
"standard" installation image (all files make it into the update.exe). This
update.exe "should" work fine for your customer.

What do you think?

Would it be possible to have an option to do that automatically, i.e.
build a web install and a standalone install in one go without
uncheking the webinstall? I'm afraid that checking/unchecking might
be overlooked... Maybe have an option in the Web install to "Also
build standalone install"

I have had situations where I would have wanted to do that and did the
uncheck/check thing, but it would be nice not to have to do that:)

That would also make it easy to keep various version updates as single
installs. I.e. have something like this on a website:

Download original 1.000 5MB full install
Download version 1.100 1MB update
Download version 1.150 0.5MB update
Download version 1.200 0.9MB update
Download latest 2.000 7.0MB full install

Hi Arnór,

This option is planned for the "Release" feature. You can then create a new
"Release" for the project and en-/disable the web install feature.

Thanks,
Friedrich

Cool! That will make this a bit safer for those of us who have
problems remembering;)

Not to complicate things...

I have to build a Full Release, A web update Release, and a Patch Update
release for each release....and it's taking forever as I have to have three
projects for each product release...

Most of my clients have very poor to no internet connectivity.....

Any help or suggestions to make this easier....btw..thanks for the 'Save As'
feature that keeps the file name now...it sames a lot of time ....no wrong
spelling any more....

23 Products..each updated at elasr once a month, each having 3 release
projects....makes for a lot of projects....143 projects the last 6 months...
