View Full Version : Weird lockup in SB7.7 and other Clarion programs

NewsArchive

Hi Friedrich,

For the past week, 10 days or so, I have been experiencing very strange
lockups in both SB7.7 _and_ several other in-house Clarion programs that I
have. I want to stress that this is NOT a SetupBuilder problem, but a
problem with Clarion compiled programs on Windows 7.

This happens if you run the program and then just press the alt key. Not
Alt+letter, just press and release the Alt key. What happens is that the
program becomes completely unresponsive. Using Spy++ it indicates that the
program is running, but the only thing it is doing is trying to get an icon.
This happens in Windows 7 Pro and Ultimate with all the latest updates on
both 32 and 64bit OS and on both workstations and virtual machines.

There is no increase in CPU cycles used by the process and no noticable
increase in memory (looking at the information for the process on the
Processes tab in the Task Manager.

_some_ of my programs also show this problem. Build Automator does not as
far as I can tell, but one client project does while another one does not.
One of the programs I use for in-house stuff hasn't been compiled for 11
months and just started showing this behaviour last week.

I cannot isolate this to any specific updates or any specific programs,
services, whatever that may be running on those machines. I haven't updated
to SB8 as I wanted to see if I could find anything with 7.7 where I can
duplicate this everywhere. So far I have duplicated this on two boxes (Win7
Ultimate, 64bit on i5-2500K and i7-3770K 16/32GB ram) and 4 virtual machines
(all 32bit) All Windows 7 Pro or Windows 7 Ultimate.

One of my programs I run from a Windows XP Pro machine (i3, 4GB ram) When I
run it on the XP machine there is no problem. If I run that same EXE over
the network from any of the Windows 7 machines it locks up.

I have not been able to see any differences in my programs that work and
those that lock up.

I'm pretty sure this has something to do with some recent windows update,
but I can't pinpoint which one. For the past 10 days I had run into this
about 4 times before I realized there was a pattern there so I'm pretty sure
I would have run into this pretty quickly if this was some problem with the
Clarion programs.

So far I have only seen this in Clarion programs but I did get the same kind
of lockup in Windows Live Mail once, but haven't been able to reproduce it.

Do you have any insights? I'm going to upgrade to SB8 and all the latest on
one VM to see if it changes anything. If it does I'll let you know:)

I just don't buy that this problem that started last week is because of
general problem in Clarion. I've been running those programs for years and
for about 18 months on multiple Windows 7 pro/ult machines and NEVER seen
this before last week. I often tap the alt key to see menu shortcuts so I'm
absolutely 100% sure that I have done this thousands of times before last
week without any problems at all.

Note that I can duplicate this in SetupBuilder 7.7 on all my windows 7
machines and virtual machines in both 32 and 64bit. My concern is if this
can be duplicated in SB that Friedrich needs to investigate it since he has
a lot more riding on this than I do:)

Hi Arnor,

I get the impression it's a Windows 7 'feature' not a general problem
in Clarion.
Anyway it is a _known_ issue that's been around for a while.

Checkout the first part of Carl Barnes article

as it outlines the particular circumstances that have to be in place
for Alt (alone) or F10 to freeze a Clarion app.

Aha! Yes, it happens with F10 also. The question then becomes: Why have I
_never_ seen this before last week? And why does this only happen in SOME
programs.

As I said before, I'm much more concerned that I can duplicate this in SB
than in my software. I'm sure Friedrich will look at this and figure out a
fix for SB. I haven't yet had a chance to test it with SB8 - anyone tried
it?

Alt+Esc 'fix' to get SB to respond again.

I've never seen this behavior. Could it have anything to do with the
fact my accelerator keys always have the underline?

Unfortunately, there is no way to fix this in SB :-( This is a known
problem in C6 compiled apps for at least 5 years.

>> SetupBuilder 7.6 Build 3576 (January 23, 2012)
>>
>> KNOWN ISSUE: IDE: "ALT key" issue on Windows 7.

BTW, it never happened with C6 programs in VMs. So if you see this in VMs
now then this is new (and caused by a recent Windows update).

SV fixed this issue in all Clarion versions after C6 #9059.

Hi Lee,

Neither have I before last week - some time around April 21st. I ran into
this first in a program I use to keep track of my customer/sales/whatever
and it was when updating a customer after an order on April 21st. Just
checked and now at least I have an idea when exactly it happened and will go
back to see if I can isolate some Windows updates that I can try to
uninstall and see if it fixes this.

I have tried to toggle the setting in Windows 7 where it will keep the
underscore on all the time (don't remember where it is atm) but it didn't
have any effects on it. I thought about that too and since two of my
programs stop except for a message about an icon I thought perhaps it was
that there is an icon or not an icon in some of the menu items in the first
menu, but that's not it... Hmm.... I have some ideas for things to check
out.

Alt-Esc, which seems to work as Alt-Tab, does unlock it.

Best regards,

Yes, I see it in all my Windows 7 VMs (VMWare Workstation 9.x - the latest
public release) where I have SB7 installed, which are all 32bit. I also see
this in my two 64bit Win7 machines.

I very much suspect that this started happening after a recent Windows
update, since I'm absolutely certain this did not happen before - this has
*never* happened to me before about 10 days ago, early last week.

If you want to pursue this and need anything tested, just let me know, since
I can duplicate this 100% in SB7. I can in _some_ of my programs so I'll
take a look and see if I can find out what I don't do in the ones that work.

I can duplicate this 100% with any C6 compiled application in non-VM Windows
7 environments including all SB versions (I reported this 5 years ago).
Unfortunately, there is no way to work around this in SB. But SV fixed this
"ALT key" issue three years ago in February 2010 and all apps compiled with
Clarion versions after C6 #9059 are not affected.

Arnor,

Just my two cents: I've only two programs where I've seen this; sort of.
One is Topscan. Every once in a while, the mouse does not work in it.
Have to use the keyboard to drop the menus (Alt key required). And it
will just as mysteriously go away after a few hours. Only Clarion app
that does this.

The other is a program written in C# that I use for Eve Online purposes.
It just locks up, task mgr kill and restart clears it. Pretty rare though.

Not sure if the above is what you observed, or is another side of the
same coin.

I still have an old "Win7 Alt" test application online (compiled three years
ago):

http://www.lindersoft.com/projects/W7_lockup_test_c6.zip

It's a very simple one with only a few lines of code, based on the
SetupBuilder IDE skeleton. Press the "Alt" key and it should look up in
Win7 (non-VM only).

Will try it out. You say "non-VM only" 3 of my tests were in 32bit Windows
7 under VMWare 9.x It locked up there too. My programs don't work any
different on VMs or not, some lock up and some don't and it's always the
same exe's that lock up no matter where I run them (under Win7)

The funny thing was (in all the years) that a Clarion 6 compiled app NEVER
locked up in a VMWare Win7 machine (when using the "Alt" key). So if it
locks up there now then this is new and caused by a recent Windows update.

Lee and all,

From what I've seen since the ALT problem was reported back when Windows 7
was released and some discovered and reported it - the Carl Barnes solution
- subscription required - is the best solution.

Encourager Software Developer Tips
http://www.encouragersoftware.com/software-developers.html

My company includes the FREE MBWin7Fix.tpl in the data folder for
Encourager Software Developer Tips.

By default, it's installed here -

C:\Users\Public\Documents\Encourager Software\Developer Tips

A TEMP solution (you're running a C6 or before produced program with bug) -
solve it while running program is described here.

http://www.encouragersoftware.com/support.html

Windows 7 or Windows 8 ALT Bug exists (XP and Vista not affected). If you
press ALT key by itself - the program will appear to freeze (not useable).
Actually the program has lost focus - to Restore - Press ALT + Escape key -
then click on Program Icon on Windows 8 or Windows 7 Taskbar to restore
program operation.

Actually, the MBWin7Fix.tpl fixed my Product Scope 8 ALT problems except
for Browse windows with Sterling Data C6 Search feature - Mike never did
come up with a fix for C6 - his search template for C7-C8 no problems -

and my company substituted this fix - Product Scope 8 minimizes the ALT
problem - most Browses DO NOT have a Search button - although one Products
and Vendors browse do include a Search feature.

This observation by Friedrich -

"BTW, it never happened with C6 programs in VMs. So if you see this in VMs
now then this is new (and caused by a recent Windows update)."

I wonder if VMware came up with a ALT workaround solution in the
Workstation product, because this is what I have noticed as well.

Bootup straight into Windows 7 x64 - possible C6 ALT problems - bootup a
virtual Windows 7 machine (VMware 9 Workstation), no C6 ALT hang!

I wonder if VMware came up with a ALT workaround solution in the

Bootup straight into Windows 7 x64 - C6 ALT problems - bootup a
virtual Windows 7 machine (VMware 9 Workstation), no C6 ALT hang!

JUST re-checked this with VMware 9 Workstation - Windows 8 x86 (32 bit)
(with latest windows updates) and YES - C6 ALT hang in Virtual Machine -
Windows 8!

Same program - Product Scope 8.1 with a single browse window opened (has
Sterling Data C6 version of Search template on this product browse window
only) -

W7 VM - no ALT hang - W8 VM - ALT HANG (loose focus) - using VMware 9
Workstation.

W8 ALT hang can be cleared while program operates by merely pressing ALT +
Escape combination.

MOST Product Scope 8.1 browses are designed WITHOUT Sterling Data Search
template, to minimize the ALT hang problem!

That could be the difference - I am using VMWare 9 Workstation with Windows

Product Scope 8.1 has only two windows that still have a possible ALT hang

I'll temp install it, and report my results.

Windows 7 with latest updates applied - x86 VM - VMware 9 Workstation

1 second ALT presses to both SetupBuilder 8 and Product Scope 8.1

Product Scope 8.1 has only two browse windows that still have a possible
ALT hang (loose focus problem) - both with Sterling Data Search template.

Windows 7 x86 VM - NO ALT problems (loose focus) with SetupBuilder 8 OR
Product Scope 8.1

* * *

Windows 8 with latest updates applied - x86 VM - VMware 9 Workstation

Product Scope 8.1 (C6 program) - browse window with Sterling Data Search
template -

1 second ALT press

ALT Bug (loose focus) - every time, consistent

ALT + Escape clears - stays in Product Scope 8.1 program.

* * *

Setupbuilder 8 test in Windows 8 x86

Windows 8 with latest updates applied - x86 VM - VMware 9 Workstation

As shown in attached screenshot -

Windows 8 x86 - SetupBuilder 8 - Features 1.sb8

General Information Hi-lighted - 1 second ALT press

ALT hang (loose focus) ALT + Escape clears - stays in Setupbuilder 8
program

General Information Tabs - NO ALT problem

* *

Additional tests for Windows 8 x86 - SetupBuilder 8

If I navigated through Features 1.sb8 project file to other sections, than
back to Project Definition - General Information, I could 1 second ALT
press, and it would NOT ALT hang (loose focus).

BUT never consistently - sometimes a ALT hang, sometimes NOT.

David,

Thank you for the testing results. Unfortunately, there is absolutely
nothing we can do to work around this issue at the moment :-(

Read my posts. This happens on both workstations and Virtual machines, 32
and 64 bit.

Arnor,

Yes, I read your posts - not sure why my single Windows 7 x86 Virtual
machine would have no ALT press (loose focus) problems for both SB7.7 and
SB8,

since I used mostly defaults when setting up the VMware Workstation 9 and
your report includes W7 x86 VM with SB ALT hang problems.

Definitely SB8 ALT Hang (loose focus) in Windows 8 x86 virtual machine for
me though.

I submitted a more complete testing results message to Friedrich today.

Hi Friedrich,

I can't even remember the last time the ALT issue happened for me (until
recent tests).
