View Full Version : Question about Detect Clarion Version

Friedrich,

Recently, I installed a few updates to some 3rd party products. Each
had "Detect Clarion Version Automatically" checked. As a user of these
installers, for some reason, I never trusted that setting enough to use it.

As it turns out, I was justified. Each installer had Clarion 9.1
selected. So? Well, 9.1 has never existed on this machine! (not yet)

So the question is, is this a minor glitch in SB or are some vendors not
using this feature correctly? Its not just one vendor and I forget
which vendors (mainly to protect the detect the guilty automatically <g>).

This is an open question that might be a bug report or a call to
understand a standard better.

Russ,

You can trust that setting 100% and it is not a glitch in SB. The vendors
of these specific 3rd-party installs are not using the latest Clarion
detection method. They are still using a detection method from an early
Clarion 9.1.10638 pre-release. The vendors simply forgot to update to the
latest Clarion/SB versions.

Background: The first internal Clarion 9.1 Build 10638 alpha *replaced* the
Clarion 9.0 environment. Both C9.1 and C9.0 shared the same Product GUID.
As a result, an installer build with Clarion 9.1 Build 10638 enabled
detection displays "Clarion 9.1" even if only Clarion 9.0 is installed. But
SoftVelocity changed to a true co-existing installation model in Clarion 9.1
Build 10655 (this is a fundamental change!). The vendors had to recompile
all installs.

You should report this installer bug to the vendors of the 3rd party
products because they are not using the latest Clarion 9.1 and SB versions!!

BTW, the following tool display the results of the Clarion detection:

http://www.lindersoft.com/forums/showthread.php?t=41693

As an example, see the attached screenshots (from clean Windows 7 machine).
Only Clarion 9.0 is installed and the installer displays Clarion 9.0. Both
Clarion 9.0 and 9.1 are installed and the installer displays Clarion 9.1 and
Clarion 9.0.

The good thing is, they only have to recompile their C9.1 enabled installs.
The SetupBuilder compiler does all the dirty work :)

Just to be on the safe side, this is the latest install image for C91
developers (includes the fix for the bug you found)

....and that version works fine!

All our installers are already recompiled and uploaded with it and a
customer who had problems with the previous version tested the new release
and reported that it worked fine now.
