Hi Friedrich,

A client reports having installed testerday a beta build of DMC
then this morning reinstalls (over like always) a newer build and this
time ONLY a reboot was triggered without any messsage

DMC installer has NO reboot code

Could it be that this morning's install was done with dmc.exe still
"running" in taskbar (maybe a badly closed session) and that the OS
thus forces a reboot ?

w7

Installers are the same between yesterday and today

Hi JP,

A silent reboot from SetupBuilder is only initiated if 1.) an install has to
replace a locked file -AND- 2.) if the install is running in silent
mode -AND- 3.) if you have set "Advanced Settings -> Reboot Message During
Silent Install" to No.

Does this help?

Hello,

Well not really as condition 2 is False and so is condition 3

So it seems the "locked" executable triggered the OS to do a reboot and
that is outside our (installer and SB) scope ....

Merci

I don't think that a "locked" executable caused this. If SetupBuilder
"requests" a reboot to let Windows replace an in-use file then the customer
sees the "This system must be restarted to complete the installation. Press
the OK button to restart this computer. Press Cancel to return to Windows
without restarting." message.

Perhaps Windows crashed the hard way (hardware issue) and that caused the
reboot. Or an external dependency install? I don't know. But if you have
"Reboot Message During Silent Install" set to "YES" and you do not initiate
any silent reboot action from your script then it was not your SB installer
that rebooted the machine silently.

Fredrich I do NOT have any reboot code in my script.... and it was NOT
a silent install either

we were wondering why he saw that forced reboot which BTW killed his
opened vm's etc ....

MUST have been totaly independant from the installer

Some of the Windows updates (despite how you have your settings made for
automatic updates) WILL download and install anyway - then force a reboot.

I've seen it a couple of times at the host OS level.

A system reboot via APIs will never "kill" VMs (Windows would display its
own set of "shut down program" yada yada messages). So another terrible
thing might have happened on his machine. Bad RAM, dying motherboard or
maybe hard drive, etc.
