Why can't MS build good installs?

I understand MS has to be all things to all people, but when installing
an update on a SSD based system takes a good deal longer than a couple
of minutes, you have to ask "What are they doing?"

Bet it would go a lot faster if they used SB.

Or rather their failure. SB detects it, so why can't MS?

It's the nature of the beast <g>. Microsoft, InstallShield, et al. and
SetupBuilder use different paradigms. SetupBuilder creates true native
setup executables and can install (unpack) files directly from the
executable. But most non-SetupBuilder installers have to extract into a
temporary folder first, then process the same contents again when doing the
"real" install. SetupBuilder always wins in this scenario :-)

Under the hood, SetupBuilder is powered by a very tricky technology, with a
perfect balance of speed and size. The SetupBuilder linker puts the
installer and uninstaller components (including all required dependencies)
into a small and sexy high-performance 178 KB executable.

Since I started using a SSD I haven't seen any speed advantages when
doing MS installs<g> Other installs seem to breeze through at amazing
speed - MS installer still clunks at the same speed. I think it's all
timer driven using 1sec intervals<g>
