View Full Version : New SetupBuilder Version 10 is delayed

All,

Our goal was to release SetupBuilder 10 on August 31, 2015 -- exactly 10
years after the Gold version of the SetupBuilder 5 "Next Installation
Generation". Unfortunately, a recent Windows 10 update broke a very
important Windows 10 feature in the new SetupBuilder 10 product. We are
working hard on a solution.

Thank you :-)

I hate this kind of situation. Working on the same issue/code for 8 days
now. This is killing me <g>

I can sympathize with that. Windows 10 "bent" a number of things I was
used to. One thing I didn't like was the cavalier way Microsoft
"decided" it was time I upgraded and just "did it," even after I toold
them NOT to. =>.<= *annoyed ferret emoji*

Hi Friedrich,

Take your time, no worries!
Is the Pin to Start feature broken?

Best regards,
Jeffrey

All the more reason to take the weekend off!

Frustration breeds more frustration.

Hi Friedrich,

A pity. I have noticed a lot of weird things with Pin2Start, sometimes
it works and sometimes it won't. I have also noticed that only one
unique executable can be pinned to Start which is a problem for us. We
have multiple shortcuts with the same target exe but with a different
start-in folder and only 1 shortcut can be pinned to Start because of
the same executable. So at this moment we have abandoned the Start menu
of Windows 10 and have it replaced by the excellent free Classic Shell
start menu which doesn't has these limitations.

Best regards,
Jeffrey

In Germany there is a saying that if someone has a lot of work:

The day has 24 hours - plus the night.

Hi Jeffrey,

You hit the nail on the head !!! But there's still hope... <g>

Scenario: You have ONE executable and MULTIPLE shortcuts to the SAME
executable (e.g. with different start in folders or different command line
options). If you install on Windows 10 then you only see ONE shortcut (but
the installer created all of them).

The cool solution in SetupBuilder 10 Developer Edition is that you can do
the impossible in Windows 10: create multiple shortcuts and multiple pinned
items to the SAME executable. No need to use the Classic Shell start menu
tool.

Look at this. Three different Start menu items with three different start
in folders to the SAME executable.

And here are three "Pinned to Start" (SB10 installer created) items to the
same executable.

Hi Friedrich,

This looks great and it's exactly what we need! :-)
So you have found a solution now?

Jeffrey

Hi Jeffrey,

:-)

Yes, I hope so. The "multiple" Start menu items feature for Windows 10
works fine in SB10 now. I am still working on a "workaround" for the "Pin
to Start" feature (they made a fundamental change from Windows 8.1 to 10).

Microsoft changed quite a few things in Windows 10. For most new Win10
specific features we need separate native 32-bit and 64-bit components to
support Windows x86 and x64 versions. Not a trivial task at all...

Great!
SB is the best!! :-)

Update: I believe we have a solution now. I literally worked around the
clock to analyze the differences between Windows 8.1 and Windows 10. I
waded through millions of API calls, rebooted the VMs 100+ per day (a clean
machine was essential). You would be surprised how many API calls are made
per millisecond.

We'll do more tests this weekend, but it's looking promising.
