View Full Version : Distribute Install File

Renewed web hosting with GoDaddy for a domain. They did not inform me
that the new web hosting over shared servers will no longer allow for
downloading of exe files.

So have cancelled the renewal and need to find another option for
distributing my SB Install programs.

Any advice or source greatly appreciated.

Hi Don,

> Any advice or source greatly appreciated.

Like I said, Hostgator would be my choice. I pay $10-$15/month for
unlimited hosting (Business plan: http://www.hostgator.com/shared). I
get great connection through their ftp servers to my folders.

Best regards,

Thanks Arnor,

Checking it out now. Good price and glad to know they don't restrict
downloading of exe files.

Not as far as I know! I haven't had any problems with them that I know
of with the Icetips domain and I moved it there somewhere around the
beginning of June.

Just signed up, will see how it goes. I wasn't using moark.us much so a
good time to switch. GoDaddy tech told me they are closing out the old
server which my main truckingregister is on so looking ahead.

I renewed with them and they have no such restriction with me. I simply
ftp the file to my server and I can reference via a web page link (if
that was appropriate for me) or give the link to my client. I also use
DropBox (free).

Both work perfectly. What I have never been able to do with the
subscription I have is execute any EXEs. But I can download anything I
put up there, including EXEs.

The problem isn't with downloading via browser etc. It's only when
downloading via SB. The .exe downloaded just fine when called from a
browser. HOwever, when I ran it via firebug it showed it was being
redirected to a https:// url. That redirection is the problem for SB.

Hi Arnor,

Working on the same problem with HostGator. Using browser, these
downloads work fine - truckingregister.us/trstatesetup.exe and
truckingregister.us/broker.tps

Running trstatesetup after download the download the broker.tps in the
script fails.

I checked the exe in firebug and there is no redirection, but the url
for the .tps is not found (Not Found, error 404), so I can't test it.

Forgot that this is Linux and uploaded as BROKER.TPS - changed it back
to broker.tps

Think I got it working. Tech set the ftp to a different setting.

That is not the discussion of this thread. GoDaddy won't let him
download EXEs.

Which is one of many reasons I loathe using browsers for activities that
a real program can do better. Like Thunderbird.
