View Full Version : Delete after install

Sadly Windows XP is now (mostly) history. Downloading an installer used to
provide options Save, Run, Cancel. With Windows 10, those options no longer
appear. If the user downloads many times, they land up with the installer
file duplicated, appended with a copy number. Once the installer has
completed, only the original installer gets deleted. How do I delete them
all?

Of course, the options are still there in Windows 10. See attached
screenshots.

But you have to code-sign the executables with a trusted code-signing
certificate from a Windows Root Certificate Authority.

Does this help?

Thanks Friedrich, but that is not so much the issue. My problem here is the
multiple downloads.
What I need is, to set up my installer to delete all the copies of the
installer after completing a successful run:

App_update.exe, App_update.exe (1), App_update.exe (2), App_update.exe (3),
App_update.exe (4), etc.

Exactly what Russ said. This is standard (browser) behavior in all modern
Windows operating systems.

BTW, it would be very bad practice to let the installer delete files from
the "Downloads" folder (it's possible to do, but not recommended at all).

Is there a way to download an installer to a specific folder, such as
C:\Temp?

By default, Windows 10 Edge browser saves all downloaded files in
"Downloads" folder present in the current user's profile folder i.e.
C:\Users\User_name\Downloads directory and there is no option given in Edge
Settings to change or customize this folder location.

Other web browsers such as Firefox, Chrome, Opera and Internet Explorer
provide options to change the downloads folder location.

But it is NOT recommended to change or customize the (standard) "Downloads"
folder.

You need to clear the download area your browser setups up for you.
Standard Windows behavior that when downloading a file and the name
exists, a number is attached as part of the file name. For some reason,
it does not like to overwrite files.

Hi Sim,

This is browser dependent, not installer dependent, so the installer
can't make any decision about where it will be downloaded to.

Hi Friedrich,

Run Windows Explorer, right click on "Downloads", select "Properties"
Then select the "Location" tab and then click on the "Move" button and
change the default download location:) http://screencast.com/t/HNQZeNZJ

Hi Arnor,

MS Edge, the default browser in Win 10, doesn't have that option - one of my
biggest gripes with Win 10.

Hi Liam,

> MS Edge, the default browser in Win 10, doesn't have that option - one of my

There are two ways to do it, both outside of Edge.

Using a registry key:
http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/8141-microsoft-edge-downloads-folder-change-windows-10-a.html

And as I described, using WINDOWS Explorer to move the location of the
Download folder:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/apps_windows_10-msedge/ms-edge-how-to-change-the-default-download/55ce6a2a-28ce-4bce-9045-d052e76f4410
After this the default download folder is moved to the new location
and any files directed to the default download folder will be sent to
the new location.

Both accomplish the goal of directing downloads to a different folder:)

They accomplish that goal, Arnor.
But depending on what I'm doing at any moment, I want to download where I
WANT it to go - separate folders for installation files, documents, tax
items, graphics, etc...

Jane

Thanks Lee,

IDM is a third party tool.

I think I'll wait for Edge 11.

I would have thought that would be better than nothing at all.

> I think I'll wait for Edge 11.

If MS follows its most recent direction it will have less user control
than 10.

Thanks Arnor, I missed that you were using WINDOWS explorer, but, like Jane, I
want to be able to choose where each downloaded file goes.

Yeah, doesn't look like MS felt that was needed by users<g>

I dump everything in to a single folder on a single drive that's shared.
From there I sort it out. I don't use IE/Edge so it's not a big deal
for me.
