View Full Version : Web update on a network ?

Hi
Is it possible to use the web update technology on a network instead of the
web ?
I have clients who connect to a corporate network over fairly slow internet
connections when in the field. I'm only allowed to put updates on the
corporate network (in a location that would be referred to by the users as
\\servername\myfolder\myupdates ) as the corporate security policy won't let
their laptops download stuff from the web.
The web update technology would be perfect, but can it be used for updates
that reside on a fileserver rather than on a web server ?
Cheers!

Hi Dave,

It can already be done if you are running a (simple) HTTP server on that
machine. We are doing this when we test new SetupBuilder versions.

In SetupBuilder 7 there will be a new feature called "LAN Update". It works
exactly like Web Update, but LAN Update does not require a HTTP server.

Thanks, Friedrich
I'll have to wait for Setupbuilder 7 I think - there is no way I'm going to
be allowed to run an HTTP server on their system !
Cheers!

That answers my question I posted yesterday <g>.

I could use the LAN update too. I'm planning a visit this week to this
client and I would need to see if they are running IIS.

This is a serious need for us as well.... I have about 230 clients that have
NO internet access, and we send out cd's to them with updates.

Instead of running the installer again, it would be nice to have them run
'Check for update - LAN / DISK or INTERNET' to check for updates...

Kind Regards

Ben

Hm, isn't autonet from fm2/3 supposed to do exactly that?

autonet are for networked computers....

My clients are single computer clients.....I want to make all my clients to
go to 'Check for updates' be it via internet, lan or cd /flash disk/runner
......and not run 'Setup.exe' every time a new update is made available.

'Check for updates' is emotionally tied to their Service Level
Agreements......we promise them 'UPDATES' and that's what they are
getting.....not SETUPS....

Kind regards

Ben

Ben,

Interesting idea - support for both Web Update and LAN Update from the same
project.

In fact, both features make use of the same installer technology. The only
difference is that LAN Update does not need the HTTP component. I'll see if
we can have something available in SetupBuilder 7 Beta.
