Friedrich,
I´m having a real bad day.
My last Vista post seems to be solved but...
Now when the webinstaller runs, it installs some files and then a #1 window
appears asking me to put the disk #1 ????
Thinkin its another problem with my vista I installed the application on a
W2000 machine and when I run the web update... window saying The web Update
application failed to detect a previos version of your application.
Help please...

Alberto,

You seem to have several different problems.

"Application failed to detect a previous version" means that you have
different Product GUIs for the initial and the web install. You have to use
the same Product GUID.

"Insert disk #1" means that you have a problem with your Internet connection
and you received an incomplete cluster file.

Hope his helps.

Friedrich

Yes Friedrich, it helps...

I´ve change the GUID, initially it was blank, but I was becarefull of
changing it in the main and the web install.
I´m using the IDEPLOY.CLI, where is SB saving the GUID?

Hi Alberto,

The Product GUID can be found in General Information -> Product
Properties -> Product GUID [PRODUCTGUID]

And make sure that you have "Use Add/Remove Programs" (the default setting)
enabled in your initial installation. Otherwise, it's not possible to
detect the "previous" installation.

I know, Iknow, I need to know where the main installation saves the GUID to
be compared later., in the registry? cause I dont see it in the IDEPLOY.CLI

Installations have to store the Product GUID under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Uninstall

Even if I´m using the IDEPLOY.INI
And what happens if I change the GUID? when I reinstall the main
installation, without unistalling, its overwrite?

You do not change the "Product GUID"! The Product GUID is used to uniquely
identify your product on Windows systems. Changing the product code after
you have distributed your release is *not* recommended. The Product GUID
should be uniquely generated for each major version of your product.

And if I made that mistake? how can I solve it? even if its working on every
computer that installs it, there are only a few.

Alberto,

It is near to impossible to solve from your end : the only way I can think
of is of doing a small exe which will write the new GUID in registry and
send that to your users

I have another similar pb after changing domain names : what I recommend
when a user has a pb downloading is simply to use the full installer which I
made polyvalent

I´ve change everything to use the Jean-Pierre host and now I realized that
that was the problem.

Rolling back from JP host to my old machine host and all problems are
gone... then using the (I dont know why) download problem from JP host... I
think I´ve discovered something...

When you are having problems with the Web Update cluster download, in some
ocations, theres no #1 window but at the end of the installation the
webinstaller.exe is not deleted and it remains lock.

Perhaps your upload to Jean-Pierre's server already failed? JP does quite a
few web updates from his server and he never had this problem. I guess it
was a "bad" upload.

The Windows WinINet component cannot detect transmission errors. This can
only be done by comparing the source and uploaded target ;-) This is the
case for all uploads.

I´ve uploaded the files trought WS_FTP and all is OK, is there any way to
add a compare procedure to SB to be sure the upload is OK?

Alberto,

I took the liberty of taking a look in my server in your sb folder : you
have TWO different updaters there - should NOT do that
PLUS there are NO INI files required by sb to update correctly

If you need two updaters then simply put them in two directories
You can create them yourself on the machine - no pbs
:)

JB, thanks a lot, I dont understand very well why not to do it, the files
have different names... but I´ll make separate folders.

Hi Alberto,

Of course, the same can happen with WS_FTP (and not only with cluster files
but also with .exe, .htm, etc.). You had a stable connection to the server
now and so it uploaded okay. You should always check if the files uploaded
are identical to your source files.

In SetupBuilder 7 there is already an option to verify the uploaded
packages.

Alberto,

Installer can be used as updater : you code all what is necessary to check
if previous version installed etc ....

Alberto,

Then you have to make a stand-alone "fix" available that changes all
instances of that Product GUID on those machines. They have to download
and run the fix, the fix changes all Product GUID instances.

Of course, you can use SetupBuilder to develop such a helper application.
