View Full Version : Running wubdate silently

Arnor (Iceptips) recently very kindly posted some code to run Wupdate
silently. Thsi works perfectly under XP but when run under Vista (with some
modifications to use shellexec) Vista UAC seems to pop up the window asking
if the program can be trusted etc.

Is there any way that wupdate can run truly silently and bypass all this
Vista stuff? I would not expect any users to have to turn off UAC or set up
permissions etc. specially to overcome all this.

Just a thought as if the user sees this pop up at program start up they will
probably say no to the run and fail to lod the update process.

TIA

John,

The elevation prompt under Vista/2008 with UAC enabled is displayed for
*all* applications that request administrator execution level privileges ;-)
Even for Vista's own applications and functions.

wupdate.exe makes use of the WinSock core component to download files.
"Unelevated" applications do not have access to this component!

By the way, wupdate.exe runs truly silent <g> Vista displays that message,
not wupdate.exe.

Hi John,

Without going into deep detail <g>, there will be a cool new set of Internet
functionality in the upcoming SetupBuilder 7 flagship product. SB7 will
make it possible to handle what you want (and more) without requesting
administrator execution level privileges under Vista and Windows Server
2008. Means, it will work completely behind the scenes...
