View Full Version : Install problem on server 2003

Hi all,

Just encountered a problem with a client today trying to install our
software on Server2003. It gets to the part where it is going to copy
the font file into c:\windows\font directory and it gives an error that
the directory is not writable (or something to that effect).

We checked the font directory and it does show an R attribute, however,
I tested this install on another server and it went through. We tried
removing the read only attribute and it gave the same message.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get this thing installed?

Thanks,
Ken

Ken,

It has nothing to do with Server 2003. The explanation is easy: the font
already exists and is currently being used and so it cannot be replaced.

Set the "Replacement Option" in your font File Properties to "Never" and you
are done.

Does this help?

Hi Friedrich,

Thanks for the response. I checked and it doesn't appear the font(s)
exist on the system yet it still hangs. I will go ahead and verify that
the flag you are referring to is properly set and try again.

Thanks and I'll keep you posted.

Cheers!
Ken

I just checked and the option was already set to "never". Any other
possibilities?

Thanks,
Ken

Unfortunately, no :-( If you see the "c:\windows\font not writable yada
yada" message then the Windows API tells SetupBuilder that the folder is not
writable (locked). Try to copy a font to that folder and see if Windows
gives you an error message text.

It's also possible that a "protection software" locked that folder during
the file installation process.

Please keep us posted.

We have another client that called in today with the same problem. I
see they are running Symantec End Point Protection on this server.
Could this be the problem. I'm not familiar with this package.

Thanks,
Ken

To test this, we have installed Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0.780.1109
on Windows Server 2003. Then we installed and registered a few test font
files and it worked without any problem.

I'm not sure what is going on, but I'm starting to think that there is
some kind of windows update that is causing this problem. We are now
getting calls from XP users where the setup is hanging trying to install
fonts. To my knowledge this just started this past week and I'm pretty
sure no changes have been made to the exe.

Thanks,
Ken

I don't think that it is a Windows update thing. SetupBuilder powers quite
a few million installations per month - if it would be a Windows update
issue then we would see more error reports here.

You can ask your customer to run the installer with the /E command line
switch and send you the c:\sbevents.txt. Maybe this gives us more
information. And an error message screenshot would be great.

Start -> Run... -> In the run dialog, enter the fully qualified pathname
including installer name with the /E switch. For example: c:\test\setup.exe
/E

If it is a "long" pathname, put double quotes around it. For example:
"c:\my long path\setup.exe" /E

Hi Friedrich,

We removed the fonts from the install and now everything appears to be
working. I will be testing it on another clients machine in a couple of
days. I will also mention that the "registering modules" section of the
install is MUCH faster with the fonts not in the equation.

I will keep you posted on this.

Thanks so much for your help.

Cheers!
Ken

PS. I tried the /e switch and didn't find anything out of the ordinary
in the file.
