View Full Version : Web Update: Displaying RTF release notes before downloading

Hey All,

Having used a home grown web update gadget for some years now, I decided it
was about time to let SB do all that dirty work for me. There are, however, a
couple of things I like about my gadget that I want wupdate to do.

Not that anyone pays attention, but I like to let the user know what version
is available. And not that anyone reads this stuff, but I have always
downloaded and displayed RTF release notes before starting a download.

These little changes took almost no time in SB. If anyone is interested in
making use of it, it's available at

Alberto,

The same as SB's. As it does just a bit more, there's a bit more to pay
attention to.

There are text resources defined in the "Clarion Open Source" group. Edit
those to your liking.

The RELEASE_NOTES_DIALOG dialog has been added. It is dependant on
#COS_DLG_RELEASE_NOTES_FILE# which references
local://%TMPDIR%\%COS_RELEASE_NOTES_FILE_NAME% That would be your own RTF file
downloaded to the specified directory and file name.

There's a couple of variables used to display versions:
%COS_INSTALLED_VERSION% and %COS_NEW_VERSION%

That's about it, I believe.

It might be worth having a look at setupcast ...

There is (amongst other things) a web update client that does this

Mark,

In addition to what Dave Beggs said specifically about the web update
client, SetupCast provides a wide range of automated tasks in publishing
software - probably for most of us -

we do a LOT of manual steps that must be repeated (AND error prone) when we
republish -

with SetupCast, you can selectively republish just certain parts of a
software release, including updating your release notes without reposting
large EXEs or ZIPs (screen shot attached to see the precision publishing of
SetupCast)

bottom line, the process is so automated, IF we make a mistake in the
install itself - rather than run through the manual steps - we can just
correct the install - hit the SetupCast publish button - and it's
available!

Amazing automation, and EXTREMELY useful!

Mark,

You're welcome - those of us who tested for Charles, and others who bought
and are now using it and loving it - so please fire away with any questions
- you'll get answers from the expert (Charles) and many who are finding
very creative ways to use it.

I have even troubleshot some SB install config problems using SetupCast so
it just keeps expanding on how many more uses you can find for it -

One of the major things I really like about SetupCast is - FIX your publish
problem - THEN republish quickly with a single Publish button!

It is a REAL timesaver!
