with one specific project only or with all projects (e.g. if you create a
new one)?
If it is with all projects, perhaps you have received a buggy virus
definition update?

Re-read your message. So you do not see any "recent" project at all?
Perhaps your protection software "locks" the following file (see attached
screenshot)? But then you should see an error code. So maybe the real-time
protection injects itself into the SB10.EXE IDE and this causes it. Try to
put the SetupBuilder IDE onto the exclusion list of your protection
software.

All my protection is Windows Firewall with Windows Virus Defender,
I did tried everything, or I believe so. I did turned Firewall to off and all
checking to off, I added SB Ide to exclusion (allowed) list
I did complete de-install and re-install of SB.
All I get is litle blue circle after SB Ide started, which one never stop with
some visible error.
Any trick to use some /switch to get log file with more details?
Btw, all worked well until today, last time I used was 2 days before.

Maybe process monitor could let you know if SB is trying to open a
file or something.
If you've never used it, I suggest:
1. That you set a filter (see attached screenshot).
2. That you click on the "Filter" menu and make sure that "Drop
Filtered Events" is ticked. Otherwise it can bog down the system very
quickly with logging of thousands of events.
3. Press Ctrl+E (when procmon is the active window) to toggle
capturing of events. I find it pretty handy to leave it turned off
until the exact time that I need it.

also some other results with no obvious reason for SB to fail.

running in the background and which of your apps displays this blue circle?

He may be referring to a wait cursor like aero_busy.ani

Aha, okay. So Darko may be refering to a Windows "wait" cursor.
SetupBuilder itself does not have any built-in wait circle nor does it use
any wait circle from a Windows resource.
There is no magic at all in the IDE start procedure. The SB10.EXE
application loads the SB10.LIC file (which holds the license information,
currect project list and configuration settings). It does not do anything
else.
Wait... if "Check for Updates" is enabled, then it launches the WUCHECK.EXE
and/or WUPDATE.EXE clients to see if an update is available. Perhaps an
external process blocks one of these applications?
Darko, please whitelist the web update clients. Or in your main
SetupBuilder folder, rename the files WUCHECK.EXE to WUCHECK_.EXE and
WUPDATE.EXE to WUPDATE_.EXE (just to test if this makes a difference).

Teamviewer would not help here because there is absolutely nothing I could
check :-( And there would not even anything I could "fix" in the IDE.
Something happened on your machine on or after 10/29. When you remove the
SB10.LIC file and then start the IDE, do you see any error message? Or
still a busy wait cursor?

nothing I can do.
There must be "something" on your machine that injects itself into the IDE
and locks it up. The IDE does not require any additional 3rd-party DLL. It
does not need specific registry entries, nothing. All IDE entries are
stored in SB10.LIC. If the .lic is missing, it's like a "system reset" and
the IDE recreates the .lic at startup. I have never seen anything similar.
Do you have a Windows restore point from, say, 10/28?

BTW, just to test it, what happens when you install the latest SetupBuilder
2018 pre-release? You can install over your existing SetupBuilder 2017
release because the installer can detect any missing or outdated components.

As Graham pointed me, I tried just everything under compatibility mode,
the last one "working with less colours" and "8-bit (256) colours" made difference.
I did changed monitor to AOC 32" but didn't changed graphic card so I wasn't
think at this direction
Now, while I can live with less colours do you suggest to try with 2018 prerelease anyway?

OK just to add few words more,
I knew that new monitor was the only difference (and yes, the new resolution
was 2560 x 1444),
so first thing to try was run to basement and take the old one Samsung 22" back
and put resolution back to 1920 x 1200
Removed new hardware AOC monitor under Control Panel Devices and set as Generic
PnP monitor, removed monitor driver as windows asked.
All the same.
Btw. whatever I did I rebooted after to be sure, Jeff, Jeff :-) as SSD reboot is a blink
NOW I was confused and then asked a question
At a moment I have my AOC 32" back

Thanks for the compatibility mode idea, Graham. I swear, this was not even
the last item on my list of possible solutions. And it does not make any

Well when Darko said it worked my first thoughts were that it was
something like the Catalyst Control Centre issues that we've had with
the Clarion IDE and disabling CCC.exe and MOM.exe (the monitoring
program) would do the trick.
But maybe what's needed is the latest Intel HD Graphics 630 drivers

But the weird thing is that he only changed the monitor and not the graphic
card. Hmmm... but I am sure he also increased screen resolution and this
might have caused the graphic card issue (low on memory?).

IMO, this does not make any sense at all <g>. Why should "8-bit (256)
colours" make a difference in this case? And you did not even change the
graphic card (no new drivers, etc.).

You can try 2018 because this will be the basis for new SetupBuilder
versions. But the IDE does absolutely nothing with colors etc. so you'll
definitely run into the same problem in the future.
It still does not make any sense to me. You changed the monitor to AOC 32"
and this "locks" a Windows application. Setting compatibility mode to
"8-bit (256) colours" (brings us back to the Windows 95 days) and it's
working again. What a nightmare.

Sounds suspiciously like resource problems. Now that he can open the
SB IDE I would shrink it and save it, reset the colors and restart the
IDE to see it works. If it does he's running really low on video
memory.

Yes, I think you are right. With the new monitor and a higher screen
resolution, video memory (or an outdated driver) might be
the culprit here.
Funny thing is that the SetupBuilder IDE itself is not resource hungry at
all. It still works fine on Windows 2000 <g>.

I saw this in W2k and XP and just notching the slider back one or two
usually did the trick, however not all graphics cards have this option.
I think we have gone full circle with Windows 10, based on some of the
others things I have spotted with win10. Perhaps MS are hoping theres a
new breed of newbies to keep busy. :D

If the GPU is on the mobo it may be possible to dedicate more memory to
it in the BIOS setting. If it's separate card, probably not...
