Thread: Access denied on TPS

    Default Access denied on TPS

    Hi Friedrich,

    I have a weird situation.

I have two demo programs. Identical except for installed exe etc.
Datafiles are put into CSIDL_LOCAL_APPDATA\Icetips Creative\Product
    Name\Data

When I run the Magic Locks demo no problems. I can browse/update
files. When I run my Previewer demo, I get "Access denied, trying
read-only" on the tps file. Both apps use the same tps, but it's in
two separate folders. The ML demo is compiled local, the Previewer
demo is compiled standalone and DLLs are distributed.

Both exes have embedded manifests "asInvoker". Both are code signed.
Both installs require Administrator. I can't see what the difference
is... I'm running as administrator and the files are in the correct
place, C:\Users\Arnor... which is my admin account. The data is
there, I'm just getting this silly error message.

    Any ideas?

If you want a second pair of eyes, post a link to the demos and I'll try
    them on a Vista box.

    Hi Jane,

    Thank you so much!

    1. The Magic Locks demo - this seems to work without any issues:

    http://www.icetips.com/downloadfile.php?FileID=74

This program installs without issues and I can browse and update the
    data with no problems.

    2. The Previewer demo. This one is the one that has problems. It
started out as a copy of the Magic Locks demo.

    http://www.icetips.com/files/PreviewerDemo.exe

Install and run (Start | Programs | Icetips Creative |Demo | Previewer
    Demo or something like that)

Click on the button furthest to the left in the toolbar to run the
first demo. On my vista machine when I'm logged in as admin, I get
"Access denied - Could not get write access, trying read-only" or
something like that. It points to the correct file, correct path etc.

When I compile the demo that I distribute with the Previwer and run
it, IT also complains about not getting write access. This doesn't
    make sense to me.

I have a feeling that I must have forgot something in the install or
made a mess somewhere, but I'm darned if I can see it<g>

I'm out of town tomorrow and about to hit the sack so I may not get
around to reply until tomorrow evening.

    Arnór,

Just installed it under Vista Ultimate - Administrator User account - and
tried all three reports - NO problems.

    BTW, nice demo!

Downloaded the installer (looks cool, btw <g>), installed it on three
different Vista Ultimate machines and started your Previewer Demo.

First of all, it looks very impressive The good news is that all three
reports work perfect here. No "access denied" or something like that.

    Hi Arnor,

FWIW... You may want to consider changing the name of either the installer
exe or the actual program exe.

I attempted to install the demo into the same folder I downloaded the
installer into. When I tried to execute the demo after the install, much to
my surprise, I executed the installer again. The application exe did not
    overwrite the installer exe.

Also, when the install completed the first time (the one that didn't work) I
received a notification from the installer that I needed to reboot the
computer. This did not happen after I changed the name of the install exe
    and re-installed.

BTW - Nice work and timely for me. I have need of the RW interface right
now. Can't wait to put it to work.

    Very interesting scenario <g>.

But you are right. If both the installer and application have the same name
(PreviewerDemo.exe) and if you install the demo into the same folder you
downloaded the installer into, then the installer is locked (in-use) and so
cannot install the application PreviewerDemo.exe. The installer asks for a
reboot (at the end of the installation) to "replace itself".

    Hi Friedrich,

I have stumbled onto this several times with different demos.

I absolutely refuse to allow an unknown install, especially a demo, be
placed on my C: drive under Program Files. I have a special folder on
another drive where I install *all* demos. I create a sub folder for the
downloaded installer, download into it and then install the program into the
    same folder.

When I'm done, hopefully, removing one folder gets rid of everything.

    BUT... That's just me....<g>

YES. I didn't realize it until I had uploaed the silly thing and was
testing it that it had the same name as the exe installed<bg> Too
    many hours at the wheel<g>

This happens if any of the files that were installed are in use, i.e.
for example if you have a file open or locked and run the install, it
apparently puts the files in a temp storage, requires a reboot and
finishes the file copying when windows starts again.

As others have said, Arnór, I also was unable to duplicate the failure you
describe (pic attached). I installed on both an Ultimate and a Home Premium
    machine.

I did find one anomaly you might want to reconsider, although probably not
an issue with your product line.
I also ran the installation as a non-admin user, logged in as "Betty". This
required an "over-the-shoulder" admin account to permit the installation
    program to run.

Unfortunately, presenting that administrator's credentials to UAC means the
demo data files were installed in that admin account's profile
(c:\users\jane\AppData\Local\yadayada) instead of in the user's
(c:\users\betty\AppData\yadayada). So when Betty runs the demo, the
    cupboard is bare (pic attached).

If that's a real-world possibility for your customers, you might want to
consider using CSIDL_COMMON_DOCUMENTS for your non-individual sample data
    instead.
