Thread: Selective rollout using Webupdate - Possible?

  1. #1

Default Selective rollout using Webupdate - Possible?

Scenerio. 100 computers all running the same app from different sites.

Now to avoid any problems during rollout is there a way in SB I can select
which computers get to update first.

1 Caveat those computers that might update first may not be the first to
update during the second round of updates.

Reason for this is, simply to control the rollout process as best possible,
and some updates might be new features which Cust A has asked for so they
get the updates first, before the rest of the computers, but the next update
might be a new feature for Cust B so I'd want B to get the updates first
    before the rest.

I dont think this is possible but thought would check first as my current
thinking is of controlling the automatic updates using the IP Driver to
switch the automatic updates on and off for a computer.

SetupBuilder is feature complete. But we had to fix a long-standing
showstopper and we need another 2-3 days of regress-testing the fix.

    Hi Richard,

The "standard" web update can't do this.

    -BUT-

The good thing is, the wupdate.exe source code is available and so you can
modify it to fit your needs.

What we have done during the SB7 alpha phase (to handle exactly what your
are trying to do) was the following: we had a modified wupdate.exe. This
connected to the server and downloaded a special encrypted "update control
list" file. Based on the information in this list, wupdate.exe downloaded
different versions for different users (or told users that no update is
available). All from the same wupdate.exe. Different results for different
    users.

When we have released SB7 (Gold) and I find a free minute, I'll try to
    document the above steps.
